I have just finished programming a new OSX Dashboard Widget. It checks the current pricing and availability for CCIE Routing and Switching, CCIE Security, CCIE Voice and CCIE Security racks. The process for creating a widget is pretty straight forward. The only part that wasn’t support out of the box was making AJAX calls to the server to get the dynamic pricing and availability. However, just ripping the Ajax function from the jQuery library worked like a charm.

The widget is completely free.

If you want to see the widget, check out Graded Labs. Also there are some screenshots posted below. If anyone has any questions just leave a comment.

It seems the rush of free iPhone applications is slowing. Today, for example there were four applications released in the free section: Clowdy Photo Blogger, Vecka, Writing Pad, and Quitter. However, there were eight new applications for the iPhone which cost money: eWallet, Jade, Kenkou, Moo Box, Shout It, Sketches, SuperPong, and Tiny Violin. Most of these applications are just updates to previously released apps. However, it does seem developers now have a incentive to update their applications more often since, by default, when you browse all applications recently released applications are the first to show up.

So, what’s the big deal. Well, if you look at the current iTunes store there are 882 applications. Of these 882 there are 231 which are free, leaving 651 as paid applications. Thus, if things keep moving in the way they are now this means that the ratio of free-to-paid applications will rise from 35% on up. This is a good sign for the Frugle people out there.

Let’s just hope the folks at google keep this in mind when they open their app store for the android os.

So, you have your iPhone 3g or you are keeping it old school and decided to keep your old iPhone and upgrade to 2.0. Either way, hopefully you have visited the App Store on your iPhone or through iTunes. On either your computer or phone you have probably seen the top 25 free applications for the phone. However, these applications are just the top 25 downloaded but not the 25 best applications. First, here is a list of Apple’s top ten downloaded free applications for the iPhone (this list changes pretty often, so the accuracy may be slightly off.)

Apple’s #10: Facebook - 3/5 Stars - 1108 Reviews

Apple’s #9: Urbanspoon - 3.5/5 Stars - 186 Reviews

Apple’s #8: AIM - 2.5/5 Stars - 1134 Reviews

Apple’s #7: iPint - 4/5 Stars - 249 Reviews

Apple’s #6: Shazam - 4.5/5 Stars - 999 Reviews

Apple’s #5: Break - 4/5 Stars - 189 Reviews

Apple’s #4: PhoneSaber - 4/5 Stars - 658 Reviews

Apple’s #3: Remote - 4.5/5 Stars - 1438 Reviews

Apple’s #2: Pandora Radio - 4.5/5 Stars - 1038 Reviews

Apple’s #1 Tap Tap Revenge - 4.5/5 Stars - 917 Reviews

Now the top ten best free iPhone applications:

#10: WritingPad - 3.5/5 Stars - 131 Reviews

When using WritingPad it really makes note taking easy. At first, I was skeptical about the accuracy of application where you draw the word you are trying to spell. Once you get the hang of it though, it’s a huge time saver. You can quickly draw out the sequence of characters using your finger and it actually works. For similar words it brings up a quick list of the most common and you simply tap the correct one.

#9: Google Mobile App - 3/5 Stars - 220 Reviews

Overall, most of the services it provides can be found with another application or the built in features of the iPhone itself. But it does provide a very nice interface for accessing your data in one place. It gives you a one-stop-shop for gMail, Photos, Contacts, Reader and provides location aware results. It’s a very nice application.

#8: vSNAX Videos - 4/5 Stars - 93 Reviews

This application is underrated, plan and simple. It provides up-to-date- content from CBS News, CNET News, VH1, Ford Models, Ripe TV and a host of others are on the way. I know that YouTube is already on the phone, but this provides some relevant content to keep you updated during the day.

#7: Tap Tap Revenge - 4.5/5 Stars - 917 Reviews

This is currently Apple’s #1 downloaded free application, but it falls way short. Why? Well if you have ever played Tap Tap Revolution on a jailbroken phone then you know the answer. In the original TTR, you could play along with songs from your library that other users have created beats to. Along with that, you could create your own beats to songs and upload them to the net.

The new App Store version does have a much better interface as well as the newly added combo system. This application is would be ranked a lot higher on this list if it had a star power or energy system that could be activated by the accelerometer.

#6: Mocha VNC Lite - 4/5 Stars - 169 Reviews

This is a great application. It lets you remote desktop into your Windows or Mac OS X computer. Provides a nice keyboard for input as well as a mouse and a scroll mode. One of the nicest features is the ability to zoom in and out using the pinch touchscreen command. Works in portrait and landscape mode on screens up to 1680×1200.

#5: Remote - 4.5/5 Stars - 1438 Reviews

Remote is a good application with some limitations. I found the application worked great for the iTunes controller, but for my use it wasn’t very practical. However, when using it as a remote for the AppleTv it worked amazingly better than the default AppleTv remote. The limitations with using it as a AppleTv remote was not being able to browse the rentals or movies for sale in the iTunes store.

#4: Myspace/Facebook - 4/5 & 3/5 Stars - 577 / 1108 Reviews

While these social networking applications aren’t perfect, they are a huge upgrade from the previous web versions. Both applications allow you to send and receive messages and Facebook allows you to chat live with online friends. Also, you can upload and share photos.

#3: Pandora Radio - 4.5/5 Stars - 1038 Reviews

With Pandora on the iPhone, you no longer need to even add any music. Why? Pandora is your personal DJ that utilizes a vast music genome database to select songs that it thinks you would like. After some fine tuning by rating songs, thumbs up or thumbs down it gets pretty accurate. Just start with a artist, song, or music category of your choice and let the music begin.

#2: Jamd - 4/5 Stars - 17 Reviews

Reading news can be fun with Jamd. Jamd brings the world around you to the tips of your fingers, literally. When a news article has multiple photos is lets you interact with the photos in Jason Bourne style. Rotating photos, expanding photos and pushing them around the stack is fun and a practical use of the iPhone’s touch screen.

#1: Shazam - 4.5/5 Stars - 999 Reviews

Shazam is a great application that I have been wanting for years. You click Tag Now and it begins listening. Then after it’s done listening it sends the sound bite up to the net and it returns with the song. It’s amazing. I knew this application would be #1 when I was eating lunch and this song came on, but was playing really low. It was able to detect the exact song and provided a link to the youtube video and links to buy the song in the iTunes store. It’s simply the best free application on the iPhone.

Synergy is a great application and a must have for those people with more than one computer at their desk. Basically, Synergy is a KVM but done through software. This means that you can use the same mouse and keyboard across all your multiple machines, even if one is windows, one is mac, and one is linux.

From the developer’s site:

Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It’s intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s).

Redirecting the mouse and keyboard is as simple as moving the mouse off the edge of your screen. Synergy also merges the clipboards of all the systems into one, allowing cut-and-paste between systems. Furthermore, it synchronizes screen savers so they all start and stop together and, if screen locking is enabled, only one screen requires a password to unlock them all. Learn more about how it works.

#2. Chicken of the VNC

At the number two spot is a great way to connect to your computer from home with out paying a dime. If you have leopard, then potentially you already have this feature, known as back to my mac. However, this requires a DotMac account. Which again is not free. There are applications like GoToMyPC which cost around $20 per month. However, all you need is Chicken of the VNC. This free application let’s you VNC (virtual network computing) from anywhere to your home computer, and it’s free. After installing you will need to find out the ip address of your home computer. You can do this by going to IP Chicken or whatismyip.

If you don’t have a router connecting all your home computers then that is all you will need to access your PC. However, if you do have a router then you must forward the VNC port 5900 to your local computer’s ip address. If you need help with forwarding that port check for your router here. Once you have all that setup you are good to go.

There is one more thing. You need to determine if you have a static or dynamic IP address from your ISP (internet service provider). If the address is static, doesn’t change, then you don’t need to worry about your computer at the other end not responding. However, if you have a dynamic IP address, then you have one last thing to do. That is setup a FREE account with DynDNS which will give you a domain name which you can connect to and which can be update to the correct IP address with their free software.

From the Developer’s Site:

A fast, lightweight VNC client for Mac OS X. A VNC client allows one to display and interact with a remote computer screen. In other words, you can use Chicken of the VNC to interact with a remote computer as though it’s right next to you.

Chicken features automatic server discovery via Rendezvous; listen mode for navigating through firewalls; an auto-scrolling full-screen mode; keychain integration; CPU performance throttling; remappable, smart unicode keybindings; mouse button emulation and native multibutton support; tons of supported transfer encodings including Tight and ZLib; and customizable connection profiles.

If you haven’t herd of Skype you must be living under a rock. Skype is a great application which allows the user to make free Skype-to-Skype calls and very cheap Skype-to-Lan calls (Skype Out). There are other programs which make this program even better such as the new iPhone application Fring. Also, you can have Skype accept incoming calls using a standard phone number, and it is also very cheap. So if you haven’t already done so get Skype now and start connecting with people.

Information from the developer’s site:

Skype isn’t just about free Skype-to-Skype calls and easy, low-cost calls to landlines and cell phones around the world. You can also do much, much more.

For starters why not send a cheap SMS directly from Skype; forward a call to your mobile; or set up anonline number for friends, family and colleagues to make a local call from their old-fashioned and reach you on Skype, wherever in the world you are.

To start using Skype’s extra features, add a little Skype Credit to your account. If it’s calling you need, try one of our monthly subscriptions and see how much you can save.

Simply put Transmission is a fast, simple, and super easy to use bit-torrent client. As, mentioned in the #18 Azureus, bit torrent is the fresh peer-2-peer file transfer protocol.Azureus is great, but it is a bit large and can be a bit more complicated than necessary. When you want a quick and easy torrent client there is Transmission!

From the developer’s site:

Transmission has been built from the ground up to be a lightweight, yet powerful BitTorrent client. Its simple, intuitive interface is designed to integrate tightly with whatever computing environment you choose to use. Transmission strikes a balance between providing useful functionality without feature bloat. Furthermore, it is free for anyone to use or modify.

It Just Works

Transmission runs natively on over five operating systems. Seamless configuration of your network, intelligent banning of peers who send corrupted data, protocol encryption, and built in Peer Exchange are some of the features which enable Transmission to download your files as quickly as possible. All this is done in the background, without the user having to worry about complicated settings.

Open Source

Transmission is fully open source, with most code licensed under the liberal MIT License and with select code licensed under the GNU General Public License.
After a short hiatius I am back with the number 5 free Mac application. I’ve always had a problem with writing down ideas and when I do actually write them down, say in OmniOutliner, I usually forget what the goal is. What problem I’m trying to solve and how this is idea relates to the main problem. Therefore, I decided to try out MindNode, mainly since it’s free. However, I’ve really found it useful to easily map ideas onto the canvas. So give it a try, and why not it’s free.

Notes from the developer’s site:

Features

There is no need to access the toolbar or the application menu.

VLC is a media player that extends support past QuickTime formats, but it also supports WMV (a typical Windows formatted media file) streams as well as a host of other formats. One of the main draws to VLC is that it is capable of playing a movie even if it is not fully downloaded. This is great for checking to see if the title of the movie is matching the content. It is also possible to see if the quality of the movie is any good before wasting time downloading it if is not.

You may recall Free Application #16. Perian, in this add-on to QuickTime we were able to extend the default media player’s capability. However, for some situations VLC still comes in handy.

Screenshots

From the developers site:

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, …) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and variousstreaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

Supported for Windows, Mac, Linux, & more.
